Dear Marilyn

Thank you for your care and attention during our hypno-birthing classes.  I have always known I wanted a natural, drug free birth but my husband was more from the pro-drug school of thought.   When I made the decision to do the hypno-birthing classes, he was sceptical but supportive of my decision.  We did the training with you and I also saw an acupuncturist for pre-delivery treatments.    

We had just finished watching a movie on a very normal Friday night and my water broke (with no prior contractions) and we went into action.  My contractions were immediately 3 minutes apart and at one stage thought Aaron might have to deliver the baby .  He was very calm & in control and knew exactly how to help me out due to our sessions with you.  Having done the daily practice sessions, I kept calm and automatically did my breathing.    Because the contractions were so close together, we headed straight to hospital – we hadn’t made it to the doors when I knew it was time  to start delivery.   We managed to get upstairs to the birthing suite, still very calm  and doing my breathing.  When the midwives heard I’d only been in labour just over an hour, one chuckled and said something along the lines of “you’ll be at it a while yet”.   She then checked my dilation and was very shocked to find the head ready to come out.      

Our beautiful baby girl was born an hour later, alert, healthy and completely drug free.  All up it was a 2 ½ hour labour and I was able to fully embrace the intense & awesome experience of child birth thanks to hypno-birthing.  My husband is now a keen advocate for hypno-birthing and is very glad we were able to share such a positive experience.  

I have heard lots of other people’s birth experiences  and have to say that doing hypno-birthing was  the best decision I could have made.  Rather than it being a fearful, screaming horror story that I so often hear about, I knew to cope and was able to fully concentrate on working with my baby to have the best experience possible.

Our little girl is now 7 ½ months old and I know that when we have our second one, there is no doubt we’ll be using our hypno-birthing techniques again.    

I would strongly recommend any parents-to-be do the course with Marilyn,  it will be one of the best decisions you make!

Our HypnoBirthing course with Marilyn/The Alternative Centre was the best preparation we could have done for the birth of our first child and I would recommend it to any mother-to-be.

My mantra to any first 'mum-to-be' now is ..."go and get yourself educated about what your body is naturally capable of, as your birth should not be like the movies."

I started my pregnancy relatively naive about natural birth options and potentially sceptical. However I was keen to learn more. When I read and heard about HypnoBirthing it instantly ticked all my boxes for the type of birth I wanted.

The best thing about doing a HypnoBirthing course was that it provided 'both' me and my husband with a thorough understanding of our birthing options and we approached our Son's birth as a 'team'. We both gained confidence in how to approach the birth and were both in a totally relaxed state of mind and excited about the birth to come by the time the day came.

Through knowing more, my husband was much more empowered and excited about assisting me with the birth and his assistance and knowledge of what was going on on the day is totally what made all the difference. I don't feel that Antenatal classes alone would have made him feel so included.

Without doing the course my husband would not have been as educated nor have known quite what to do to help me. He may have been less inclined to approach the birth knowing that he could make a big difference. His busy work schedule meant that he would never have found time to read the book.

Doing the course rather than just reading the book alone, meant we took timeout for 2hours every week, for over 5 weeks to focus solely on the birth in depth, and discuss our options with Marilyn. This wouldn't have happened without committing to the course.  It also gave us the opportunity to have instruction on practicing the skills required for deep relaxation and visualisations. Through actually doing these with Marilyn my husband and I understood them more, and were able communicate well all through the birth about what was happening.

(Having to travel 40 mins for the course also meant that we took the opportunity to go for dinner each week  after the lesson which gave us more time out of our busy lives to stop and talk about the birth)

Watching the videos of other HypnoBirths during the classes was a defining moment for me to realise how calm a birth could be and gave me excellent incentive to put HypnoBirthing practice into place to prepare myself mentally for a calm and easy birth.

Doing the course over a 5 week period, was also essential as it allowed my husband and I to develop the skills and understanding over time which we wouldn't have done in a shorter space of time.

The course was worth every cent especially when you consider the cost of anesthetics and other drugs which I believe HypnoBirthing helped us avoid.

Marilyn's approach to the course was very passionate and supportive and she gave me the confidence to believe that I could have an easy birth.

As a result we did have a relatively easy birth and I can't wait for the next one.

Our son to date has been a very placid and contented baby and my small circle of HypnoBirthing-mum friends have all said the same of their babies.

Every women should learn about HypnoBirthing before they choose their birthing options.

Sienna (photo attached) is now 9 weeks and the flurry of activity has subsided enough for me to send you a big "thank you!". Both Alana and I found all the techniques and material throughout our time with you instrumental in allowing us to approach our first birth with clarity and confidence. In addition the emotional support that grew from your professional compassion towards us also provided a platform for my family to find new depths of intimacy and strength that has continued well beyond our time together to embrace everything about living with this "little person".

Thank you Marilyn for being such a positive and inspiring part of our birth
journey for Coco.  I had a good birth with my first daughter 7 years ago,
but it did seem a long time ago... I was gifted the Hypnobirthing book
whilst pregnant this time and after reading it I actively searched out a
practitioner as we were both excited by the prospect of 'pain free birth',
and whatever else Hypnobirthing had to offer.

Now on the other side of birth I look back and realize there is so much more
to birthing than pain management.   Your course allowed us to develop
confidence in my ability to let my body lead, connection between my husband
and I, our baby and our existing daughter, confidence in dealing with our
medical support, excitement about the process and a relaxed and centered
approach to Coco's arrival.

 Witnessing the other births throughout the course allowed us to see
directly what was possible and also how varied it might be, something we
both commented on was the 'alertness' and 'calmness' of the mums directly
after their births, happily this was definitely the case for me too.  While
after my first birth I was quite 'out of myself' for some time, this time
round, the moment she appeared I felt fantastic, alert, happy and excited.

While our birthing experience was not the same as any we watched (just as
they were different from each other), and I can't claim to have been the
silent type, or to not have had moments of wondering how I was going to get
to the next step, we both feel very strongly that our hypnobirthing training
prepared us for what was an extraordinary experience enjoyed by our whole
family.

To hear our 7 year old describe seeing her sisters arrival as 'amazing' to
her friends and relatives, still gives me goose-bumps.  Remembering her in
the bath with me both at home and at the hospital, rubbing my back,
breathing with me and chanting (we hadn't rehearsed any of that, she was
following her intuition) is something I will remember forever.  Attending  a
couple of the classes with us, certainly allowed her to feel involved and
engaged, so a special thank you for making her so welcome too.

Both my husband and I will be recommending the program (I have heard him
telling anyone who will listen what a 'must do' it is!) He felt so much more
a part of the process this time, and I knew more than ever that he was right
there with me.  So thank you again Marilyn, we look forward to catching up

Andrew and I have a beautiful baby boy who was born in a calm, peaceful and loving environment. We faithfully practiced our hypnobirthing skills and it paid off... no pain, no drugs, no stitches! Andrew received the baby and our son was alert and found his own way to the breast to self attach. Yes there was intense pressure and birthing was a very physical experience. Fortunately Andrew had learned the techniques to keep me focussed so he was able to be truly supportive and our midwife gave us the space to birth naturally!

We were home from hospital that afternoon and I went back to uni the next day. Thank-you Marilyn for guiding us through the course and for patiently answering all of our questions. Our son is relaxed, happy and unharmed by medical intervention. We are truly blessed. Katherine L. Brisbane 2009.

Hello Marilyn, I just wanted to say a big thank you!Baby Bentley Hicks arrived 2 weeks after the EDD. Me and Nathan were on our own 95% of the time and I only called the midwife when I had the urge to breathe the baby down. 40 minutes later 11 lb 6 oz Jacob was born. No tearing, no complications, no drugs , NO PAIN!!!!!  Just alot of pressure which was sometime uncomfortable but that was it. Of course the midwife said I had a high pain threshold which is a load of rubbish. I can't believe what a lovely experience it was. Thank you once again. Nicola and Nathan.  UK, 2007.

Hi Marilyn,
The birth was great! Waters broke at 2am, contractions started 3am, hospital 3.30am, contractions slowly intensified - used relaxation, breathing and visualisations - all very successful. No drugs.

Relaxed on left side for most of labour, baby birthed at 7.30am. I didn't realise I had dilated fully. Did feel some discomfort but never too much to bear and not panicked like previous births. I think about 4 contractions for 2nd stage. The midwives commented on little blood loss at birth. Baby was very calm and just looked around and went back to sleep, then she fed for over an hour. Small graze to perineum, no trauma, no stitches. Recovery fantastic! Ilaria feeding well and she definitely smiles!

Was unfortunately ill right up till the end and wasn't sure if I had it in me to birth but it was good. And now feel physically on top of the world.

I completed the hypnobirthing course with Julie Clarke which helped me cement the skills. She is terrific!

Life Coaching.. 

Before coming to see Marilyn, my only experience with her had been the few times I’d seen her, intermittently, over the course of my wife becoming a Hypnobirthing® practitioner. My wife would go away during the days for classes with her and would come home, spouting off tid-bits of the wealth of knowledge that had been poured into her. Marilyn had some very unique talents concerning her mind and body and the control she had over both. I was very intrigued by these talents and wanted to know more. Therefore, I embarked on a six-month course of life coaching with her, determined to acquire these talents for myself.

Our sessions were very casual, with very little formality to begin with and even less in the latter sessions in the series. They were held, most often, at her home, in a very particular room that she had set up as her own. There were no water-running machines or golden Buddha doorstops. Nor was there any new-age music full of harps or birds tweeting or babbling brooks to create the illusion of serenity. There were some very comfortable chairs, a warm drink always offered to me, and a lovely sea-breeze through the room. Succinctly, there was no pretension in her approach.

During my course with her, I discovered that we talked very little about those talents I wanted, and more about me. Often, I would leave wondering what on earth we’d talked about, or how the topic of conversation had drifted, and stayed for the duration, on that particular subject. Still, I continued on in faith, because my wife had started looking at me funny and telling me how she could see me changing before her eyes. (I now know those funny looks she gave me were of admiration and wonder.)

The original reason for my coming to her was addressed in a way. It was addressed in that Marilyn, in her experience and wisdom, saw my want to be different, and set apart from the rest of the population, as a symptom of something hurting inside me. I never did receive those particular talents that I wanted though I’m sure she would have taught me if I’d been persistent. Instead, I was brought to the point where I could be honest with myself, and ask at the end if I really, truly still wanted them. I didn’t. I was fine with who I was. I needed no one’s approval. Needing no-one’s approval in life is something I’ve never had, and is something I’ll never trade.

Whether it was Marilyn herself, or her merely facilitating my own decision to change my life, I came out of our sessions, not a different person, but a better one. A more developed person. I was travelling a particular route and I saw her on the road as a beacon lighting the next portion of my journey.

I consider her a close friend and confidant. I recommend her in the strongest possible way to anyone willing to admit they don’t already know everything.
